Since 1997, The Alliance has observed National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month in May by sponsoring a county-wide art contest for DeKalb County youth. The art contest seeks to (1) mobilize youth and encourage them to focus on three major threats to youth – ATOD use, Teen Pregnancy and STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) – through the use of art, and (2) to increase public awareness about these issues, their interconnectedness and impact on young people today. The contest is age- and developmentally-appropriate and is open to DeKalb County school-aged youth in three categories: elementary school level (book marks), middle school level (book covers) and high school level (posters). The top three winners from each school or youth serving organization are submitted for judging to determine the county-wide winners. Artwork is judged for content and message. The 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd place winners and honorable mentions in each category receive cash awards and certificates. If applicable, the winner’s art teacher receives the same cash prize that must be used to purchase art supplies for their classes and/or programs. All participates receive Certificates of Participation. Implementing Collaborating Partners for this initiative are: The DeKalb Teen Pregnancy Prevention Task Force, DeKalb County Schools Prevention/Intervention Department, and DeKalb County Board of Health, Adolescent Health Unit.
